Choosing a Material for Modern Tables and Countertops

Choosing a Material for Modern Tables and Countertops

When choosing a material for a modern table or countertop, it can be overwhelming when faced with so many options. Marble, granite, wood, stainless steel, glass, quartz are just some of the options available – each with their own pros and cons.

The modern table that you choose for your home will largely depend on the functions you need. Each type of material for tables or counters comes with benefits and difficulties that each person and home can handle differently. sohoConcept is here to help you find the modern table and countertop material that is right for you!

Modern Table and Countertop Material Options

There are dozens of materials available for tables and countertops. We've narrowed them down to a few of our favourite ones to get you started on your hunt for the perfect one!

Granite
Granite has traditionally been the top choice for countertops as it comes in a variety of colours and each piece is unique. It stands up well to splashes, nicks, heat, and regular wear and tear as it is very heavy. This weight also means that your cabinetry underneath must be sturdy enough to support it. As a type of stone, granite must be sealed and resealed every so often to avoid staining, and you must be careful of what cleaning products you use on it as they may erode the surface over time.

Glass
Modern glass tables are popular for many types of tables – nesting tables, dining tables, coffee tables, desks, and more. While solid glass is not commonly used for countertops, it is becoming increasing popular for islands or for use with other counter top materials as well. The best benefit of glass is that it's easy to clean and matches almost any decor.

A modern glass table like sohoConcept's Calvin Glass Series makes a beautiful addition to any home. Sturdy, long lasting, sleek, and modern, you can host large family dinners here or enjoy breakfast with a loved one. We also have our Milano Extendable Table, which is a perfect extendable dining table for large family gatherings.

Wood
Wood is a traditional countertop material that is making a comeback in recent years. While modern wood tables have always been popular due to their longevity and weight, wood countertops are making a comeback due to their aesthetic. Wood is the recommended countertop material for cutting, slicing, and chopping food. Wood countertops and butcherblocks are typically made out of heavy woods, can prevent bacteria growth, and are a beautiful mix of modern table and traditional. The Calvin Wood Series, Anne Dining Table, and Bosphorus Dining Tabl are examples of modern wood tables that are beautiful and long-lasting for a variety of uses. If you're looking for a lighter wood, our Malibu Dining Table is available in natural ash.

Marble
Marble is one of our favourite table and countertop materials at sohoConcept. It's glamorous, modern, luxurious, and unique. Marble stands up to heat well, so it's optimal for people who bake and cook often. As a stone (similar to granite), it does require sealing to prevent staining. Marble works great for cooking stations and tables because of its ability to withstand heat. Modern marble tables such as sohoConcept's Calvin Marble Series, make great additions to any dining or kitchen area.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is the go-to option for commercial kitchens like restaurants and hotels. It's nearly indestructible, resisting heat and bacteria, and is extremely easy to clean. It has become more common in residential kitchens in the past couple decades, however it is more problematic in this use. Fingerprints show very easily and must be wiped off frequently, and it can easily dent. In a commercial kitchen, this is normal and less problematic, but in a residential kitchen where you may host dinners and invite guests over, you may not want to have to worry about the aesthetic of your countertop.

Tile
Tile comes in on our list as the least expensive table and countertop material. Ceramic and porcelain tile are the most commonly used and provide near limitless options for colour and design and in the event of a chip or crack, all you have to do is replace one tile. You must ensure that it is sealed properly, as unsealed grout is very prone to staining and any standing moisture can contribute to bacterial growth. If you like to use your table or countertops to bake or cook, tile may not be the best option for you. Cutting boards are necessary!
